Færøsk Litteraturs Historie 1298-1950

"Færøsk Litteraturs Historie - 1298-1950" is the first Volume of two that Faroese author and professor in literature, Jógvan Isaksen has recently published in Danish. Faroese written literature is only about 100 years old. The first established Faroese grammar dates back to 1854, but it is not until 1909 that the first Faroese novel is published and five years later the first poetry collection is published, marking the beginning of the history of Faroese written literature. Faroese written literature is closely related to Faroese history in general, and thus there are references in the book to Faroese history and developments in society. The first volume gives an account of the medieval myths and stories of kings and legends which are part of Faroese culture history form handed down from one generation to the next in aural form. Volume II will focus on contemporary Faroese literature from 1950 and onwards.
