Sára Malena - The last witch in the Faroe Islands is the title of Sólrún Michelsen new novel published by Sprotin last week.

There are many stories of Sára Malena from the island of Skúgvoy who had a very unusual fate. She lived in the 19th century where superstition and and narrow-mindedness were ubiquitous.

She was an unruly child. So strange and wild that her father nearly ended her life when she was 4 years old.

Later she was accused of practicing witchcraft, and therefore people were afraid of her and shunned her. Sára Malena was alone and left in the cold. She was bullied and never experienced love. Most of the stories about her insinuate that she was a sorcerer.

How does a woman survive in a small village where people are convinced that, she with her words is the reason boats sink and men die in mysterious ways? The widows and fatherless children are left behind with the grief, bitterness and horror… While the stories go all around the country.
