Book Launch & Reception - On the Other Side is March
It is not every day that a Faroese novel is published in English translation. We are therefore delighted to announce the publication of the novel On the other side is March by Sólrún Michelsen, translated from the Faroese (Hinumegin er mars) by Marita Thomsen and published by Francis Boutle Publishers.
We would be honoured if you could join us at Swedenborg Hall in London on Wednesday evening 19 April from 19:00 to help us celebrate this important literary event, together with the author, Sólrún Michelsen, and translator Marita Thomson.
On the other side is March is a tender and darkly witty account of dementia, a lyrical tapestry of a daughter visiting and revisiting her mother as she recedes into memories lost and found. It is a fictionalised memoir flitting between dialogue, flashbacks and ruminations, interwoven with snippets of hymns, many in Danish, Faroese medieval ballads and folk songs in a way that aptly illustrates how the rich oral traditions of singing and storytelling have kept the Faroese language alive. Steeped in the rich imagery of a land of storms and ocean horizons, Sólrún Michelsen’s novel is also a universal narrative of the lives of women.
Our evening, arranged jointly with Francis Boutle Publishers and The representation of the Faroe Islands in London, will feature a conversation between the author and her translator, with short readings from the novel in both English and Faroese.
London-based Faroese singer/songwriter, Dan Olsen, will also perform some of his music.
The book launch and music will be followed by drinks and finger food, with plenty of time for mingling and networking.
To register, please use the Eventbrite link below. The event is free of charge, but advance booking, preferably by Friday 14 April, is highly recommended.
